Detailed overview

Greg Egan builds Schild's Ladder around a physics mistake whose consequences become a moral emergency. Cass travels from Earth to Mimosa Station, three hundred and seventy light-years away, to test a target graph derived from Kusnanto Sarumpaet's Quantum Graph Theory. The opening pages make the "Diamond Graph" and its tetravalent nodes more than background exposition: they are Cass's way of imagining identity, cosmology, and experiment as patterned continuities. The childhood chapters on Turaev explain why Tchicaya's politics are not reducible to curiosity. During Erdal's Slowdown, he and Mariama illegally accelerate themselves, roam their motionless town, and discover native microbial life on a power-station radiator. Because spacefaring cultures quarantine worlds with indigenous life, the discovery should force everyone to leave Turaev. Mariama persuades Tchicaya to conceal it. That secret gives the later far-side debate its emotional charge: Tchicaya has already chosen familiar human continuity over alien life once, while Mariama has already tested how much upheaval she is willing to impose on others. Egan's far side is not just "another universe." The Preservationist turn to Planck worms forces the question from theory into action. Murasaki and Santos articulate a revived evolutionary militarism, while Tarek surprisingly denounces the idea that alien sentience can be dismissed because it is unlike human life. Birago and the anachronauts then try to end the matter by destroying the Rindler and releasing self-mutating Planck worms. The anachronauts' digital lobotomies, biological brains, 23rd-century language, potted-plant bombs, and willingness to kill without backup reintroduce a form of ancient human violence that most of Egan's civilization has treated as extinct. Their attack leaves Tchicaya, Mariama, Cass, and the Sarumpaet racing inside the far side to stop a plague built from nearside fear.

The ending loops the opening experiment into a contact story. Cass, preserved in the crushed Oppenheimer femtomachine and treated by the Colonists as a legendary near-side artifact, becomes the translator who can explain the Planck worms and authorize the tar pit in the Bright. Tchicaya and Mariama save the far side not by mastering it, but by trusting the Colonists, accepting Cass's broken testimony, and letting Mariama remain behind to continue the work. Cass's final glimpse of the Diamond Graph, stable as a tiny layer between two vendeks, returns the Big Bang image as a found object in a living foreign world. Kadir and Zyfete run a spoken-command experiment with mesons, coherent beams, audit rituals, and factional observers, but the result fails to replicate an earlier sequence and leaves Kadir accusing Yielders before apologizing. Zyfete confronts Tchicaya about Zapata, planetary homes, the cost of exile, and the arrogance of treating the novo-vacuum as a "toy." They hide in the power station, play with hexapod robots, argue about Turaev's cosmic apron strings, and sleep beside coolant pipes while the outside world remains almost frozen. Sophus supports the moratorium, but Murasaki and Santos argue that alien life unlike humans deserves no reciprocal concern and should be destroyed before it can threaten humanity. Rasmah suits up to chase them while Tchicaya runs for the shuttle carrying Yann's toolkit and authorization for the Left Hand. Kadir disowns the rebels, and Tchicaya discovers blood in the instrumentation workshop and realizes that the attackers have removed their Qusps, Mediators, and Exoselves, leaving biological brains and 23rd-century language. Chapter 14

Summary: Tchicaya survives outside the destroyed Rindler, contacts the Left Hand, and uses Yann's toolkit to confirm that the vendeks initially remain unchanged. Three and a half hours later the border turns opalescent gray as the Right Hand's Planck worms sweep across at lightspeed, forcing the far side back until the signaling layer halts the retreat about one hundred kilometers down. Mariama, burned and working through a damaged IR link, rescues Tchicaya with the shuttle, explains that the Planck worms will mutate, and helps reposition the Left Hand near the new border. The ship flees through microverse after microverse, crossing vendek boundaries, slowing subjective time, and eventually stopping at a darkness that swallows every probe. After weeks of failure, Tchicaya proposes putting the whole Sarumpaet into a coherent superposition of strategies so failed crossings cancel like a quantum computation. Before the launch, he catches Mariama trying to expel entangled near-side qubits that could poison the quantum maneuver; she admits the weapon, purges it through a safe route, and the toolkit begins the crossing countdown. Tchicaya and Mariama send a mobile prime-flashing banner, which six Colonists examine by cooperative sensing, wrap in a towing bubble, and carry through tunnels, an engineered velocity current, and a highway toward a larger city. There they illuminate the banner beside a crushed nugget of near-side nuclear matter that the toolkit identifies as an old femtomachine rather than a random meteorite.
